‘Alamara’ is the name for the Banyan tree in the south Indian languages. The Banyan Tree is the national tree of our country. In the olden days and in villages, the banyan tree is the centre of life; it is the ‘seat’ of government for villages. It symbolizes family, home, community and communication. Banyan trees enjoy a long life and are considered immortal. These trees are considered sacred symbolising the knowledge and enlightenment and hence honoured by people in India. The tree lives for hundreds of years as new shoots grows from branches to ground; its crown spreads majestically offering shelter to the working formers, travellers and is laden with fruit, offering a habitat for wildlife.
Wish of the parents of persons with developmental disabilities like autism is that the proposed Activity – the Integrated Residential care Centre shall be an immortal ongoing shelter spreading the many branches for the persons with developmental disabilities.
The developmental disabilities like Autism are lifelong neurobiological disabilities that affect the normal functioning of the brain. In case of Autism, each individual is different in all respect and majority are non verbal, have no or less control on their hands, fists and fingers; hence can not perform their basic functions of taking food, bath, wash and dressing. Persons with autism require life long help initially by parents and when parents are no more, by a trained, compassionate care giver.
Even if parents set aside financial support to their best which is enough to take care of their son/ daughter, there is no guarantee that the child will get the same continuous help for his day to day requirements during the old age days of the parents and after the death of parents. Hence there is a necessity of non-government, charitable, a self sustainable organization with holistic residential care facility run by group of parents and other like minded professionals, domain experts and the individuals who are working for the cause.
As part of its charitable, educational and social activities, The Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham (the “Mutt”) establishes, operates and supports many educational institutions, hospitals, hostels, resource centres, rehabilitation and care centres etc for the benefit of the society under your able leadership and under the blessings, direction and inspiring guidance of His Holiness – The Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji.
“Alamara Residential Centre for Persons with Developmental Disabilities” is a project of The Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham at Uttari village, Kaggalipura (off Kanakapura Road), Bangalore South. Under the auspice of Sri Mutt, the other projects coming up with in the campus are The Early Intervention School, Day School for the persons with Developmental Disabilities, Old Age home, Primary health centre etc.
The Activity under ALAMARA Residential centre include providing day care facility, vocational training, integrated therapy centers, respite care unit and social security etc.
“To help the persons with developmental disability to live a respectful, fulfilling life; To find an answer to the question that every parent of a person with developmental disability has – ‘who will take care of my son/daughter after me?’; To build a word-class, personalized assisted living centre worthy of emulation.”
ALAMARA Residential Centre is committed to fostering compassion and improving tomorrow for those with developmental disabilities like autism. ALAMARA Residential Centre is dedicated to helping those with developmental disabilities to live their life to the fullest, while creating a family atmosphere that creates a better tomorrow. ALAMARA Residential centre will strive to offer a community that promotes self respect, independence, and improves the quality of life for all of our residents – an atmosphere that encourages the participation of residents’ families in their day– to–day lives.
